Therefore, the patient does not feel pain. In a typical parathyroidectomy, the surgeon makes a small incision in the skin of the neck and removes a thin layer of muscle to gain access to the thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands behind it. Then, after evaluating the parathyroid glands, he removes the damaged glands. The surgeon then moves the muscles in the front of the neck back into position and secures them in place. The glands absorb a blue dye that helps the surgeon find the parathyroid glands during surgery.<\/li>\n<li>The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia.<\/li>\n<li>Once you are completely unconscious, the surgeon will make a small (5-7cm) incision in your neck or mouth and remove one or more of the affected parathyroid glands.<\/li>\n<li>Then the incision site is sutured, which is usually removed on the second day after surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes a thin plastic tube (drain) is inserted into the wound. This will help collect excess fluid from the surgical area.
