Children whose parents, grandparents, or siblings have hypothyroidism are at a higher risk for thyroid disease. This is also true if there\u2019s a family history of immune problems that impact the thyroid.<\/p>\n<p>Autoimmune conditions, such as Graves\u2019 disease or Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis, more commonly appear during puberty. These thyroid conditions more frequently affect girls than boys.<\/p>\n<p>Other common causes of hypothyroidism in children include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>not enough iodine in a child\u2019s diet<\/li>\n<li>being born with a nonfunctional thyroid or without a thyroid gland (also called congenital hypothyroidism)<\/li>\n<li>improper treatment of a mother\u2019s thyroid disease during pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>abnormal pituitary gland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_Hypothyroidism_in_Children\"><\/span>Symptoms of Hypothyroidism in Children<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Newborns\"><\/span>Newborns<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Hypothyroidism occurs at any age, but the symptoms vary in children. In newborns, symptoms occur in the first few weeks or months after birth. The symptoms are subtle and can be missed by parents and doctors. Symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes<\/li>\n<li>constipation<\/li>\n<li>poor feeding<\/li>\n<li>cold skin<\/li>\n<li>decreased crying<\/li>\n<li>loud breathing<\/li>\n<li>sleeping more often\/decreased activity<\/li>\n<li>larger soft spot on the head<\/li>\n<li>a large tongue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Toddlers_and_Gradeschoolers\"><\/span>Toddlers and Gradeschoolers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The problems associated with hypothyroidism beginning in early childhood vary depending on the child\u2019s age. Thyroid conditions in young children may appear as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>shorter than average height<\/li>\n<li>shorter than average limbs<\/li>\n<li>permanent teeth that develop later<\/li>\n<li>puberty that starts later<\/li>\n<li>slowed mental development<\/li>\n<li>heart rate that is slower than average<\/li>\n<li>hair may be brittle<\/li>\n<li>facial features may be puffy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are the most frequent adult thyroid symptoms to appear in children:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>tiredness<\/li>\n<li>constipation<\/li>\n<li>dry skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis_and_Treatment_of_Hypothyroidism_in_Children\"><\/span>Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypothyroidism in Children<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your doctor will decide on the best way to diagnose your child depending on their age and other factors. Generally, a physical exam and specific diagnostic testing can confirm the diagnosis. The diagnostic testing might involve blood tests that measure certain hormones like thyroid-stimulating hormone (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/tsh\">TSH<\/a>) or thyroxine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/t4-test\">T4<\/a>), or imaging tests. About\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2903524\/\">1 out of every 4,000<\/a>\u00a0babies is diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism. An enlarged thyroid, known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/symptom\/goiter\">goiter<\/a>, can cause problems with breathing and swallowing. Your child\u2019s doctor will check for this problem by feeling their neck.<\/p>\n<p>There are different treatment options for hypothyroidism. Treatment typically involves daily thyroid hormone therapy with a medication called levothyroxine (Synthroid). The dose will be determined by your doctor and dependent on various factors like the age of your child. Treatment for a newborn with thyroid disease is more successful when started within the child\u2019s first month of life. If left untreated, low thyroid hormones can lead to problems with the nervous system or developmental delays. However, doctors regularly screen babies within the first four weeks of life, so these problems don\u2019t usually occur. Having less than normal thyroid function is a common problem and is easily tested and treated.
