This technique should not be used for follicular thyroid cancer. It works by using heat generated from radiofrequency waves to destroy abnormal tissue. The physician performs the procedure under ultrasound guidance, which ensures high precision and targets only the thyroid nodule, preventing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. The heat destroys the nodule tissue, causing it to gradually shrink over several months. Studies show that nodule volume is reduced by 50\u201380% after RFA, and this reduction is long-lasting. Thyroid RFA is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The entire procedure takes about one hour, and the patient is discharged the same day with no scar on the neck. Mild pain or bruising after the procedure is usually relieved with simple painkillers.<\/p>\n<p>In the following sections, we will also discuss which types of thyroid cancer should not be treated with this method.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advantages_of_Thyroid_RF\"><\/span><strong>Advantages of Thyroid RF<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>RF has several potential benefits for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules and has been accepted in recent years as a less invasive alternative to thyroid surgery. The most important advantages of radiofrequency thyroidectomy are:<br \/>\n\u2022 Short recovery period: Most patients return to normal life within 24 hours after the procedure.<br \/>\n\u2022 Completely outpatient: This procedure is performed in a clinic setting without the need for hospitalization.<br \/>\n\u2022 Maintains the health of the thyroid gland: Radiofrequency only targets the damaged tissue; therefore, there is no need for hormonal drugs (prescribed during surgery).<br \/>\n\u2022 No need for anesthesia: Since the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, the patient is protected from the risks and complications of general anesthesia.<br \/>\n\u2022 \u200b\u200bMaintains aesthetic appearance: No incisions or stitches are made on the neck. This prevents the formation of excess flesh (keloids).<br \/>\n\u2022 Parathyroid gland preservation: The risk of damage to the calcium-regulating glands (parathyroid) is minimized in this method compared to open surgery.<br \/>\n\u2022 Minimally invasive: Radiofrequency is performed without the need for incisions and only through a very small opening (the size of a needle tip).<br \/>\n\u2022 Bleeding-free: Since no surgical blade is used, the patient will not have any active bleeding.<br \/>\n\u2022 Infection prevention: Since no wound or incision is made on the skin, the risk of bacteria entering and causing infection is minimized.<br \/>\n\u2022 Vascular safety: The heat of the RF needle simultaneously closes the very fine blood vessels at the edges of the mass, which prevents internal bleeding.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Disadvantages_of_Thyroid_RF\"><\/span>Disadvantages of Thyroid RF<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite its significant advantages, thyroid radiofrequency is also associated with limitations and disadvantages, including:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Need for repeated treatment<\/strong>: Very large nodules require more than one treatment session. To achieve the desired result, the patient must undergo radiofrequency several times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Diagnostic limitation<\/strong>: Unlike surgery, the mass is not removed from the body in the RF method. For this reason, it is not possible to fully examine the cells under the microscope. This is a serious diagnostic limitation; therefore, in suspicious cases (such as follicular), the risk of hidden malignancy remains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Limitation in mass size<\/strong>: This technique is often effective for nodules smaller than 4 cm. For larger nodules, surgery is usually a more suitable option.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Number of nodules<\/strong>: The highest success rate of RF is observed in the simultaneous treatment of one to three nodules. If there are multiple nodules in different thyroid lobes, the effectiveness of this method decreases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Recurrence:<\/strong> In some cases, the thyroid nodule may grow back after treatment. In this case, the patient may need repeated RF sessions.<br \/>\nStrong dependence on the skill of the doctor: The final result and the prevention of damage to the nerves in the neck depend entirely on the experience of the radiologist.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Side_Effects_of_Thyroid_RF\"><\/span><strong>Side Effects of Thyroid RF<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When performed by an experienced specialist, thyroid RFA is very safe. Possible mild and temporary side effects include:<br \/>\n&#8211; Bruising<br \/>\n&#8211; Mild pain<br \/>\n&#8211; Neck swelling or discomfort<br \/>\n&#8211; Temporary swallowing difficulty<br \/>\n&#8211; Temporary voice changes<br \/>\n&#8211; Rare complications such as skin burns or numbness<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Is_RF_Not_Recommended\"><\/span><strong>When Is RF Not Recommended?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Thyroid RF is a safe, effective and advanced alternative to surgery for benign thyroid nodules. However, its use is not recommended in some situations and should be carried out under the close supervision of a thyroid surgeon:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pregnancy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Radiofrequency is not considered safe during pregnancy because of the possibility of unpleasant side effects for the fetus.<br \/>\nPacemaker use<br \/>\nPatients who use pacemakers or electronic heart devices are not suitable candidates for thyroid RF due to radio wave interference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proximity to vital structures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the thyroid nodule is located in the vicinity of sensitive structures such as the esophagus or major blood vessels, the use of RF is not recommended due to the possibility of unwanted heat transfer to these tissues and causing irreversible complications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proximity to the vocal cord nerve:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the location of the nodule is too close to the nerves controlling the vocal cords, there is a risk of voice damage and RF is not performed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Follicular Adenoma Thyroid Cancer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Radiofrequency is not recommended for follicular thyroid tumors because benign and malignant follicular cells are similar. When a follicular cell breaks through the sheath, it is diagnosed as malignant. This means that the entire mass must first be surgically removed and, after a thorough examination, its benignity or malignancy can be determined. In fact, burning the tissue eliminates the opportunity for an accurate diagnosis of pathology.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conditions_of_Thyroid_RF_in_Follicular_Cancer\"><\/span><strong>Conditions of Thyroid RF in Follicular Cancer<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One major limitation of RFA is follicular thyroid nodules. Neither FNA nor RFA can definitively differentiate benign from malignant follicular adenomas. Diagnosis requires complete surgical removal and microscopic examination. Therefore, RFA in these cases should only be considered with a multidisciplinary medical team.<\/p>\n<p>Conclusion<\/p>\n<p>Radiofrequency ablation is an advanced, minimally invasive alternative for benign thyroid nodules. However, it is not suitable for all thyroid nodules, especially follicular adenomas.
