Cysts can grow almost anywhere in your body or under your skin.<\/p>\n<p>There are many types of cysts. Most cysts are benign, or noncancerous.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_do_people_get_cysts\"><\/span><strong>Why do people get cysts?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cysts are most commonly caused by blockage in a duct, which can be due to trauma, infection, or even an inherited tendency.\u00a0 The type of cyst depends on where it forms \u2013 some cysts can be internal (such as in a breast, the ovaries, or the kidneys) while others are external and form in visible locations on the body.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_can_happen_if_a_cyst_is_left_untreated\"><\/span>What can happen if a cyst is left untreated?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If left untreated, benign cysts can cause serious complications including:\u00a0Infection\u00a0\u2013 the cyst fills with bacteria and pus, and becomes an abscess. If the abscess bursts inside the body, there is a risk of blood poisoning (septicaemia).<\/p>\n<p><strong>thyroid cyst:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thyroid cysts are usually always benign, or noncancerous. 2 In some cases, your doctor might .recommend further testing or intervention, but oftentimes you&#8217;ll just need to monitor the cyst<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_a_thyroid_cyst_burst\"><\/span>Can a thyroid cyst burst?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Spontaneous sudden hemorrhagic rupture of a thyroid gland cyst is a\u00a0rare condition\u00a0but should be considered in a massive abrupt neck swelling that could potentially be life threatening.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_happens_if_you_have_a_cyst_on_your_thyroid\"><\/span>What happens if you have a cyst on your thyroid?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Rapidly expanding cysts can\u00a0become symptomatic producing a noticeable lump in the neck, pain, difficulty swallowing\u00a0and very rarely change in voice. Cysts that are completely fluid filled have a much lower risk of thyroid cancer compared to cysts that have solid components.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_causes_thyroid_cysts_to_grow\"><\/span>What causes thyroid cysts to grow?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The majority of thyroid nodules are caused by\u00a0an overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue. The cause of this overgrowth is usually unknown, but there is a strong genetic basis.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_thyroid_cyst_be_removed_without_surgery\"><\/span>Can thyroid cyst be removed without surgery?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Benign nodules are usually not removed\u00a0unless they grow over time or cause symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or choking. Laser ablation therapy for benign thyroid nodules is a relatively new, non-surgical procedure.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_are_thyroid_cysts_removed\"><\/span>How are thyroid cysts removed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Fine-needle aspiration biopsy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the procedure, your doctor inserts a very thin needle in the nodule and removes a sample of cells. The procedure is usually done in your doctor&#8217;s office, takes about 20 minutes and has few risks.
