Until recently, thyroid cancer was the fastest growing cancer in the United States. Thyroid cancer is the fifth most common cancer in women. Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with thyroid cancer is 98%, and its long-term survival is 95% or more.<\/p>\n<p>Your quality of life rarely declines after thyroid cancer surgery, but you should do things after surgery, including checkups.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_should_be_done_after_thyroid_surgery\"><\/span><strong>What should be done after thyroid surgery?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You may have to take thyroid hormone medications after your thyroid is removed. Your thyroid level is good as long as you take the medication and follow-up.<\/p>\n<p>If your thyroid level is normal, you have no reason to worry about taking thyroid medication or thyroid cancer surgery, and there will be no reason to gain weight, get tired, lose hair, and so on. The fact is that almost all people who take thyroid hormone medications will perform well as long as they take the medication as prescribed, check their thyroid levels at least once or twice a year, and lead a healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Most patients do not need further treatment after surgery:<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, excellent thyroid cancer surgery is the only treatment needed for papillary thyroid cancer. Traditional chemotherapy is not used to treat papillary thyroid cancer. External radiation therapy or radiotherapy is rarely used to further treat papillary thyroid cancer. A diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer is not the only indication for treatment after thyroid surgery, and you should take care after surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Following surgery by patients with thyroid cancer by a thyroid specialist for the treatment of papillary cancer, follow-up and screening is important and should be best managed, followed and followed by an endocrinologist.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_should_be_checked_after_thyroid_cancer_surgery\"><\/span><strong>What should be checked after thyroid cancer surgery?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After thyroid cancer surgery, your thyroid hormone levels should be checked within 4 to 6 weeks to determine if thyroid hormone medications are needed or if your medication dose needs to be adjusted again. Six months after thyroid cancer surgery and every year thereafter, the evidence must be fully reviewed and a physical examination performed by an ultrasound specialist. The following blood tests are always done (usually twice a year after the first year) for monitoring and evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>After surgery, imaging tests such as CT scans, radio iodine scans, or PET \/ CT scans may be needed if there is a risk of recurrence or evidence of recurrence. In these cases, further imaging studies are done to look at the neck and other areas of the body where the cancer may have spread. The need for these tests should be determined by experienced thyroid cancer specialists.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_should_be_done_after_thyroid_surgery-2\"><\/span><strong>What should be done after thyroid surgery?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You should plan for the next visits and check-ups and report any new signs and symptoms that will not go away, and do not wait until your next scheduled appointment. Tell your treatment team any new lumps or swelling, swallowing or breathing problems, sore throat, or cough that will not go away.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of recurrence of thyroid cancer (recurrence) depends on many factors, including the type and stage of the cancer. Most thyroid cancers grow slowly, so the cancer can come back 10 years or more after treatment. Seals usually need follow-up. Subsequent visits for thyroid cancer are scheduled: every 3 to 4 months for the first 2 years, every 6 months for the next 2 years, then once a year. Your healthcare team will often ask you questions about the side effects of your treatment and how you are coping. They will also ask about your symptoms. Your doctor may perform a physical exam, including: feeling swollen or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, listening to your lungs, blood pressure, and pulse.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_tests_need_to_be_done_after_surgery\"><\/span><strong>What tests need to be done after surgery?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Tests are often part of subsequent care. You may have tests such as: Blood tests to check thyroglobulin (Tg) levels, thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_information_do_you_need_to_know_after_surgery\"><\/span>What information do you need to know after surgery?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After the surgery, you need to ask your doctor for information that may be helpful to you. List your questions and take the list with you each time you visit and write down the answers.
