Colloid is a clear, gelatinous substance found inside the follicles of the thyroid gland and is the storage site for the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. In general, thyroid nodules or nodules develop when thyroid tissue grows abnormally. In colloid al cystic nodules, this overgrowth can be extensive. Fortunately, colloid al thyroid nodules do not spread outside the thyroid. Most colloid al thyroid cysts do not require treatment; however, follow-up examinations are necessary to monitor any growth or changes in these cysts.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thyroid_colloid_cyst_vs_other_types_of_thyroid_nodules\"><\/span><strong>Thyroid colloid cyst vs. other types of thyroid nodules<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Thyroid colloid al cysts are just one type of thyroid nodule. Thyroid nodules are very common, and approximately 60 percent of adults have at least one nodule. Fortunately, about 95 percent of thyroid nodules are noncancerous. A thyroid nodule is not always filled with fluid. But when it is filled with fluid (as in colloid al cysts thyroid) is called cystic.<\/p>\n<p>Colloid nodules can be completely filled with fluid or contain a mixture of fluid and solid parts. Completely cystic nodules (meaning they are 100% filled with fluid) are rarely cancerous. Although a colloid al thyroid nodule may increase in size, it often remains within the thyroid and does not spread to other parts of the body.<\/p>\n<p>While colloid al nodules are the most common type of thyroid nodule, it is also possible to develop other types of nodules, such as hyperfunctioning nodules or follicular adenomas. Some people may experience more than one nodule at the same time. Benign thyroid nodules are classified as nonfunctional and functional.<\/p>\n<p>Most thyroid nodules are nonfunctional, meaning that despite the presence of the nodule, thyroid hormone levels remain normal. In contrast, \u201cfunctional\u201d nodules produce too much thyroid hormone. Functional nodules can become overactive, affecting the entire gland and causing it to become overactive.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_Thyroid_Colloid_Cysts\"><\/span><strong>Symptoms of Thyroid Colloid Cysts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most thyroid colloid cysts do not cause any specific signs or symptoms unless they become large enough to affect surrounding tissues or are visible in the neck.<\/p>\n<p>When thyroid colloid s become symptomatic, they may cause the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visible swelling in the neck or a palpable lump<\/li>\n<li>Hoarseness or voice changes<\/li>\n<li>Pain in the neck<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In some cases, thyroid nodules may produce too much thyroid hormone, causing symptoms of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sudden and rapid weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Fast or irregular heartbeat<\/li>\n<li>Nervousness or anxiety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In some cases, you may also experience symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Dry skin<\/li>\n<li>Weight gain<\/li>\n<li>Constipation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes_of_thyroid_colloid_cysts\"><\/span>Causes of thyroid colloid cysts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The causes of thyroid colloid cysts are complex and often involve a combination of factors. Although much research has been done in this area, more studies are needed to fully understand the mechanism of these cysts. The following factors are the most important factors involved in the development of thyroid colloid s:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Overgrowth of thyroid tissue:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One of the main causes of colloid s is the abnormal and excessive growth of thyroid tissue. This growth can occur for various reasons that are not yet fully understood.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Destruction of thyroid tissue:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes, the breakdown of dead or damaged thyroid cells can cause cysts. This process can occur due to various factors, such as inflammation or infection.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bulk accumulation:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The accumulation of certain substances in thyroid tissue (such as colloid s) can cause cysts to form over time.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Genetic factors<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Genetic factors also play a role in the development of colloid s. This means that some people are more likely to develop thyroid colloid s due to hereditary factors.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Underlying thyroid problems:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Some underlying conditions can contribute to the formation of thyroid colloid s, including Hashimoto&#8217;s thyroiditis (an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the thyroid gland). Multinodular goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) can also contribute to the formation of colloid s, as colloid s often develop at the same time as the thyroid enlarges. An enlarged thyroid gland may have multiple thyroid nodules.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Long-term low TSH:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>People whose thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels have been low for a long time are more likely to develop colloid s. If TSH levels remain low, a nodule may enlarge, rupture, and secrete hormones. Large colloid s can put pressure on nearby structures, including the nerves of the vocal cords.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Iodine deficiency:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In some cases, a lack of iodine in the body can cause the thyroid gland to enlarge, increasing the likelihood of developing cysts.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Environmental factors:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Some environmental factors, such as exposure to radiation, may also play a role in the development of thyroid cysts.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lifestyle factors:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Some lifestyle factors can play a role in the development or exacerbation of thyroid colloid cysts; for example, smoking, chronic stress, poor diet, etc.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Risk_of_cancer_in_thyroid_colloid_cysts\"><\/span><strong>Risk of cancer in thyroid colloid cysts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most thyroid colloid nodules are cystic; that is, they are completely or largely filled with fluid. In general, one in every 20 thyroid nodules may become cancerous. Examples of cancerous thyroid nodules include papillary or follicular carcinoma, medullary cancer, or anaplastic cancer. Also, the risk of non-functioning nodules (i.e., those that do not produce thyroid hormone) becoming cancerous is 14 to 22 percent; In contrast, hyperactive nodules (nodules that produce thyroid hormone) rarely become cancerous.<\/p>\n<p>However, the risk of thyroid colloid cysts becoming cancerous is much lower. The probability of pure colloid cysts (i.e. those that are 100% liquid) turning into cancer is less than 2%.<\/p>\n<p>Genetic factors, a history of radiotherapy in the head and neck area, a history of thyroid surgery, etc. increase the risk of thyroid colloid cysts becoming cancerous.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis_of_thyroid_colloid_cysts\"><\/span><strong>Diagnosis of thyroid colloid cysts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most thyroid colloid cysts are asymptomatic; that is, patients do not notice them on their own and are detected accidentally during clinical examinations or thyroid function tests. In general, the methods for diagnosing thyroid colloid cysts are as follows:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Clinical examination:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Depending on the size and location of the colloid nodule, the doctor may be able to feel it during a physical examination of the thyroid gland. In about 5 percent of women and 1 percent of men living in iodine-deficient areas, thyroid nodules can be detected by physical examination.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Blood test:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If your doctor suspects or diagnoses a colloid al cyst during an examination, they will order a blood test that will check your thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, as well as your T3 and T4 levels.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ultrasound:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If your TSH, T3, and T4 levels are abnormal, an ultrasound will be done to determine the type of nodule and to check the lymph nodes around your neck. An ultrasound can help determine the type and size of the nodule, and can also check if the nodule has spread to nearby tissues or is pressing on nearby nerves or lymph nodes.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fine needle aspiration: (FNA)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A fine needle aspiration may be performed for non-functioning nodules, depending on the ultrasound findings and the size of the nodule. In this procedure, the doctor inserts a thin needle through the skin into the thyroid nodule to collect cells for testing.<\/p>\n<p>Performing the FNA while using an ultrasound machine helps ensure the needle is placed correctly. A medicine may be used to numb the neck area to prevent discomfort. The doctor collects several cell samples from different areas of the nodule to analyze for cancer characteristics and sends them to a laboratory.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Molecular testing:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes, FNA results are interpreted as \u201cindeterminate,\u201d meaning that the results are not definitive about whether the cells are cancerous or benign. In this case, the doctor may send the sample for molecular testing. Molecular testing analyzes the genetic sequence of the cells\u2019 DNA or RNA to check for gene mutations.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Radioactive iodine uptake test:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This test is used for patients who have thyroid nodules and whose TSH levels are lower than normal. In this test, a radionuclide (radioactive iodine) is given to the patient in the form of a pill or capsule or by injection. A few hours after taking the radioactive iodine (6 hours later or even the next day), images of the thyroid gland are taken using a gamma camera.<\/p>\n<p>These images show how much of the radioactive iodine has been absorbed by the thyroid gland. Normal iodine uptake indicates normal thyroid function. Excessive iodine uptake may indicate hyperthyroidism, Graves&#8217; disease, or the presence of a functioning thyroid nodule. Low iodine uptake indicates hypothyroidism, thyroid inflammation, or the presence of a non-functioning nodule.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment_of_thyroid_colloid_cysts\"><\/span><strong>Treatment of thyroid colloid cysts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Treatment options depend on the size and type of colloid cyst. For cysts that are noncancerous or do not cause problems, no treatment is needed. Most thyroid colloid cysts remain the same size. Some may shrink on their own or even disappear completely without any treatment.<\/p>\n<p>For noncancerous colloid cysts that are not growing significantly, regular follow-up and periodic ultrasounds are sufficient. If the thyroid colloid cysts are growing at a worrying rate, a biopsy may be needed to rule out cancer, and then appropriate treatment may be prescribed based on the results.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Surgery<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Thyroid colloid cysts are usually benign, but in some cases, they can contain cancer cells. Even benign colloid cysts may require surgery if they grow significantly.<\/p>\n<p>Surgical removal of a thyroid colloid cyst is recommended in the following cases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diagnosis of thyroid cancer or results of genetic tests that indicate a risk of cancer.<\/li>\n<li>A large nodule that causes pain, difficulty breathing, speech impairment, or difficulty swallowing.<\/li>\n<li>The nodule&#8217;s effect on thyroid hormone production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two of the most common thyroid surgeries for removing thyroid colloid s are:<\/p>\n<p>Thyroid lobectomy: Surgical removal of one of the two lobes of the thyroid gland, which may be done for thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Thyroidectomy: Surgical removal of the entire thyroid gland, or almost all of it, which may be recommended for treating some thyroid cancers or goiters.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that any thyroid surgery should be performed by an experienced and skilled thyroid surgeon to minimize the complications of thyroid surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Seyed Ahmad Fanaei, a thyroid and parathyroid surgeon with experience of more than 5,000 successful thyroid surgeries, is a member of the American Thyroid Association. Other treatment options that may be used along with thyroid surgery or alone include:<\/p>\n<p>Certain medications: An alternative to radioactive iodine may be thyroid-blocking medications such as propylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole (Tapazole).<\/p>\n<p>Thyroid radiofrequency ablation: This less invasive option involves using an ultrasound-guided needle to deliver an electrical current to the nodule, heating it up and then shrinking it. This type of procedure is usually recommended for large, benign nodules.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_thyroid_colloid_cysts_become_cancerous\"><\/span><strong>Can thyroid colloid cysts become cancerous?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Thyroid colloid cysts rarely become cancerous, but they can. So it\u2019s important to have them checked regularly. If there are multiple nodules in the thyroid, each one should be evaluated separately.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_a_cancerous_thyroid_colloid_cyst_treated\"><\/span><strong>How is a cancerous thyroid colloid cyst treated?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If a thyroid colloid cyst is diagnosed as cancerous, surgery is usually performed. Several factors, such as age, a family history of thyroid cancer, exposure to radiation, and the presence of multiple nodules in the thyroid, can increase the risk of thyroid cancer in people with colloid cysts.
