Thyroid Nodules and Nutrition
Thyroid nodules are lumps or bumps that form on the thyroid gland. Approximately 50 percent of people with thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s disease or hypothyroidism have thyroid nodules. Fortunately, these nodules are benign in most cases. The good news is that you can help shrink many of these benign nodules by getting the right treatment and following a healthy diet. So if you have thyroid nodules, you should be careful about the foods you eat, as they may have a positive or negative effect on your thyroid function. However, keep in mind that diet modification is not considered a stand-alone method of treating thyroid nodules and should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment, such as thyroid surgery, recommended by a thyroid specialist.
Shrink Thyroid Nodules with Diet
The appropriate medical treatment for thyroid nodules depends on the type of thyroid nodule you have. However, since most nodules are benign and many are caused by chronic inflammation from conditions like Hashimoto’s, most people will benefit from modifying their diet to reduce inflammation.
It is recommended that you first have a simple blood test to check your levels of nutrients such as iodine, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium. If you are diagnosed with a nutrient deficiency, you can correct your nutritional deficiencies by increasing your intake of certain foods and taking supplements.
What foods are good for thyroid nodules?
Following a balanced diet that includes whole, healthy foods and plenty of vegetables and protein can help boost your thyroid function and shrink or heal thyroid nodules, in addition to improving your overall health. Some of the best foods for reducing the size of thyroid nodules and improving thyroid inflammation include:
- Foods rich in zinc and B vitamins such as spinach, cashews, lamb, chicken, eggs, mushrooms and asparagus
- Foods rich in selenium such as Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, cashews, spinach, halibut, salmon and oats
- Foods rich in vitamin D such as egg yolks, mushrooms and some fish such as tuna, mackerel and salmon
- Whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat
- Increasing consumption of seafood such as fish, shellfish and seaweed
- Consuming raw nuts and seeds regularly
- Consuming sources of healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado oil, natural coconut oil, chia seeds and fatty fish
- Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily
Foods That Are Bad for Thyroid Nodules
To help treat thyroid nodules with diet, you should eliminate as many inflammatory foods from your diet as possible. Inflammatory foods can vary from person to person. However, the following foods are common triggers that people with thyroid nodules should avoid.
Dairy: Dairy products may cause inflammation and autoimmune reactions, negatively affecting thyroid health and function. Minimize their intake and choose low-fat dairy products that contain probiotics.
Gluten: For those who are sensitive to gluten, consuming gluten-free products can reduce antibody levels and inflammation.
Processed and fast foods: These foods contain additives, flavorings, chemical dyes, and are also full of saturated fats and added sugar. Eliminating processed foods (sausages and ready meals) and fast foods is an effective measure to improve overall health, including strengthening your thyroid gland function.
Artificial sugars: Minimizing the consumption of artificial sugars and refined carbohydrates in your daily diet helps reduce inflammation, improve your immune system, and shrink thyroid nodules.
Soy and soy products such as soy milk, soy cheese, soy nuts
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cabbage; especially raw (consume them cooked if desired)
Caffeine: Minimize your intake of strong tea, strong coffee, energy drinks, and chocolate.
Excessive iodine: Although iodine deficiency is a factor in the formation and enlargement of thyroid nodules, you should not overdo iodine intake. Because excessive iodine can also be harmful to your thyroid and lead to enlargement of thyroid nodules. Eat iodine-rich foods like kelp in moderation and avoid taking iodine supplements.
The Bottom Line
Thyroid nodules are relatively common, with about half of people with thyroid problems having them. In addition to the treatments available to shrink and eliminate them, making some dietary changes can help boost thyroid health and combat thyroid nodules. While diet alone cannot cure thyroid nodules, eating a healthy diet, along with targeted medical treatment, can help manage symptoms and control thyroid nodules. Following a healthy, balanced diet and minimizing inflammatory foods can help reduce the size of thyroid nodules by reducing overall inflammation and boosting thyroid function.
